Jewish Values and Social Responsibility
Drive JCC Association’s Workplace Decisions
Building on the JCC Movement’s long
tradition of social responsibility, and the Jewish dedication
to life and justice, JCC Association has introduced two changes
to its workplace. One encourages and supports employees to
better their health through regular exercise. The other takes
practical steps to ensure decent living and working conditions
around the world.
JCC Association staff members now have the
chance to exercise during the workday on a Power Plate training
device. Vibration training on the Power Plate offers a host
of benefits such as improving muscle strength, flexibility,
range of motion, bone density, and stimulating blood circulation.
Additionally, studies have proven Power Plate's ability to
reduce muscle pain and soreness, and expedite the recovery
of damaged muscles and tendons.
Power Plate is easy to use, giving the employees
a great “sweatless” workout in 15 to 20 minutes
without having to bother changing clothes. It was JCC Association
President Allan Finkelstein’s idea to install the device,
and representatives of Power Plate spent an afternoon training
JCC Association staff on proper use. Having the device in
the office encourages people to exercise, which everyone acknowledges
is beneficial to health. Good health and fitness have traditionally
been at the heart of the JCC Movement.
JCC Association always provided coffee for
its employees, but its recent switch to Fair-Trade Certified
coffee is in line with its Jewish values. Fair-Trade Certified
coffee helps small farmers in the developing world to sell
their product at a reasonable and consistent price. These
farmers join in cooperatives that reinvest a portion of the
profit in community development projects. Because small farmers
are better stewards of their land, buying this coffee also
helps the environment. “We are proud to be among the
organizations and institutions that value workers and are
able to ‘walk the talk,’ said Patricia Cipora
Harte, vice-president, program services. Supporting these
small farmers as they try to improve their lives echoes the
efforts of the early twentieth century settlement houses,
later to become Jewish Community Centers, which helped Jewish
factory workers establish safe working conditions.
JCC Association is proud to be part
of a tradition that promotes social responsibility and worker
well being in keeping with an ethical heritage that spans
thousands of years.
