Fifth Torah Is Dedicated for Use by Military Chaplains

Another special Torah was dedicated on July 12 at the Merage JCC of Orange County in Irvine, California, honoring esteemed members of the community Irving and Elinor Burg; Doris Chasin, in memory of Milton Chasin; Allan and Sandy Fainbarg; Arnold Feuerstein; Leonard Jaffe; Isidore Myers and Saretta Berlin. The Torah was the fifth in the Torahs for Our Troops project, an initiative of JWB Jewish Chaplains Council. JWB is commissioning six smaller Torah scrolls of lighter weight, which are easier for chaplains to move about the battle theater and from ship to ship. Each Torah is hand written and costs approximately $60,000.

Captain Irving A. Elson, Marine chaplain, offered remarks, and Command Chaplain Joel Newman from the naval base at Coronado gave the D’var Torah. Rabbi Harold L. Robinson, director of JWB, and Cantor Mark Thompson also attended.
