Jewish
Chaplains Recite Psalms in Hebrew for Ilan Ramon
Tragedy drew Jewish chaplains to the forefront, as they stepped
forward to provide a uniquely Jewish presence at the national
commemoration of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. In a
gesture of respect to the memory of Israeli astronaut Col.
Ilan Ramon, Chaplain Harold Robinson, USNR, recited the 23rd
Psalm in Hebrew at the memorial service held at NASA headquarters
in Houston, Texas, on February 5, 2003, for the seven victims.
Chaplain Gene Theriot provided the accompanying rendition
in English at the somber service commemorating the deaths
of the astronauts when the shuttle disintegrated just before
landing.
Chaplain Brett Oxman, USAF, accompanied the remains of Col.
Ramon from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana to Kennedy
International Airport, New York, and offered appropriate prayers
as Ramon's remains were put aboard an El Al airplane on Sunday
night, February 9, and flown to Israel for burial. The casket
was accompanied by an Air Force honor guard from Dover AFB,
Delaware.
JWB Jewish Chaplains Council,

the United States armed forces and providing support for Jewish
