You Can Help JCCs Impacted by Hurricane Sandy

Many of you have asked what your JCC can do to help the JCCs and their constituents severely affected by Hurricane Sandy, and we are grateful for your support. We have been reaching out to impacted JCCs to conduct an initial damage survey, calling and e-mailing virtually every JCC in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tri-state area. The storm affected them in different ways, but almost every JCC has been touched and had their normal routine disrupted. It will come as no surprise that the JCCs most severely affected are those near the water, in Long Island, Staten Island, and Brooklyn.

  • Suffolk Y, Commack, NY
  • Shorefront YM & YWHA of Brighton Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, NY
  • Edith & Carl Marks JCH of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY
  • Kings Bay YM-YWHA, Brooklyn, NY
  • Samuel Field YM & YWHA, Little Neck, NY
  • Samuel Field Y Bay Terrace, Bayside, NY
  • Central Queens YM & YWHA, Forest Hills, NY
  • JCC of Greater Five Towns, Cedarhurst, NY
  • JCC of Staten Island, NY
  • Friedberg JCC, Oceanside, NY

If your JCC is collecting goods such as clothing, batteries, water, blankets, and such, and you are within driving distance of any of the JCCs listed above, you might deliver the donations directly. Many JCCs are posting immediate needs on their Facebook pages or websites, so check to see what’s needed at the moment. The JCC in Manhattan has established a special Facebook page for volunteers: http://www.facebook.com/JCCSandyRelief.

If you are farther away, but want to help the relief effort,  you can donate to your local Federation’s Hurricane Relief Fund or directly to the JFNA Hurricane Relief Fund at http://jfeds.org/SandyRelief. In addition, donors may text RELIEF to 51818 on a mobile device to pledge a donation or send checks to the JFNA national mailbox at The Jewish Federations of North America, Wall Street Station, P.O. Box 148, New York, NY 10268.

Thank you for all your help and support. The response to this disaster has been enormous and inspiring, and underscores the true meaning of community.
