An unprecedented number of registrations for training in the Mandel Center for Jewish Education’s camp initiative TAG have made it necessary to add another day in the New York metro area. All day trainings are being held throughout February in Chicago, San Francisco, and Atlanta, in addition to two days of training at JCC Association’s office in New York City. Eighty JCCs have sent more than 125 participants to learn to use the TAG units in their day and resident camps.
TAG: Jewish Values through JCC Camping is a curricular initiative designed to help JCC campers and staff explore issues of daily living through a Jewish lens. TAG develops discrete Jewish content and programming units for day and resident camps, finding ways to integrate Jewish life, experience, and concepts into the fabric of camp. Each activity unit has art, drama, music, storytelling, discussion, and Jewish text study components. The Mandel Center for Jewish Education is a division of JCC Association.
Of the 80 camps that are participating, 14 are first timers. The other camps have used TAG before and have registered to learn more about the three new units: B’tzelem Elohim, Look at Me, and a guide for facilitators. There are more than forty different units in the TAG program, ranging from the environment to the summer parshiot. TAG is an acronym for Torah (learning and living), Avodah (service and spirituality), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness). According to the saying of our sages in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Sages), these are the three principles upon which the world stands.
