A group of JCC Association board members will be enjoying watching world-class Jewish athletes at the Maccabiah Games in Israel this month when they combine a visit to the Jewish State with attendance at the “Jewish Olympics.” Planned through our office in Jerusalem, the trip focuses on the artistic and innovation sectors of Israel, along with exciting sports action. The first Maccabiah Games were held in 1932, and were opened by the mayor of Tel Aviv, Meir Dizengoff, riding through town on a white horse. Almost four hundred athletes from 14 countries participated, including 60 Jewish athletes from Arab lands.
The Maccabiah Games are held every four years, and this year’s delegations hail from all over the world, including nine from Latin America and 20 from Europe.
