“Create sacred time for children to explore and wonder about the world around them,” said Mark Horowitz, director of the JCC Association’s early childhood education department, in an article on Parentdish, the AOL parenting website. His thoughts were echoed by representatives of other faiths, all of whom emphasized the need to answer children’s questions honestly, even when we don’t know the answer. Empathy, wonder, and the ability to listen are the keystones to developing a child’s spirituality.
JCC Association’s early childhood values curriculum, An Ethical Start, encourages young children and their families to appreciate the diversity and the wonder of the world, and JCC preschools provide many opportunities for children to share their innate spirituality.
