JCC Association, along with the rest of the Jewish world, mourns the passing of the great Jewish educator and scholar, Rabbi David Hartman. Founder of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, Rabbi Hartman served as scholar-in-residence at three JCCs of North America Biennial Conventions and taught many JCC professional and lay leaders on Israel seminars. His son Donniel Hartman, also a rabbi, was the scholar-in-residence at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly, New Jersey, for years, and addressed the last Biennial in New Orleans.
David Hartman was born in Brooklyn and studied with the modern Orthodox sage Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik at Yeshiva University, from where he received his ordination. He served as a pulpit rabbi in Montreal before he made aliyah with his wife and children in 1971. He established the Hartman Institute in 1976, dedicating it to the memory of his father. David Hartman is associated with religious pluralism, both in Israel and in the Diaspora, and was celebrated as an extraordinary teacher and thinker. His loss is deeply felt.
