On August 20, a final presentation of one of our small, portable Torahs took place at the Merage Jewish Community Center of Orange County in Irvine, Calif. During the ceremony, Rabbi Harold Robinson, a retired rear admiral and director of the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, handed the Torah to Lt. Joshua Sherwin, a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. This video captures a moving tribute to the Jewish men and women who serve this country.
The Torah is being used for High Holiday services this year in Okinawa, Japan. It provides a link to Jewish community for Jewish military personnel stationed far from home.
The Torah was completed through a crowd-funding campaign using Tilt, which was a tremendous success. JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, a program of JCC Association, thanks everyone who made this possible, including Irv and Nancy Chase and the staff of the Merage JCC, who assisted with the ceremony sending it on its journey.
