Dear Mr. Chase,
The Jewish military community of Okinawa welcomed a special guest from California for Rosh Hashanah, a recently completed Torah. This Torah, made possible through your kindness and generosity, made our High Holy Day services more complete, and connected us to the Jewish community of Orange County, Calif.
It is not easy to be in a place like Okinawa for Rosh Hashanah. We are far from our families and far from a major Jewish community. We’ve built a community here, but often lack the most integral pieces, like a Torah. Your gift enabled our small military community to feel like other Jewish communities around the world, gathering together to celebrate the New Year, reading the same verses from the Torah as our family and friends back home are reading. When we danced on Simchat Torah, we thought of all the communities of Israel dancing with scrolls around the world and especially of you and the Jews of Orange County celebrating the festival with us.
Thank you for making this Torah possible and helping those serving in Okinawa this High Holiday season.
